The HR Moye Foundation was founded in 2002 in honor of a beloved coach, great humanitarian, and outstanding sports figure in El Paso… the late H.R. Moye. Moye was a coach at Jefferson High School starting in 1954 and was a principal in 1969–72.

Moye’s mission in life was to help students, especially the less fortunate… and his humanitarian spirit was displayed to others in love and compassion. He helped young people in so many ways that he became more of a father figure to them.

It is in honoring Moye’s compassionate spirit that the Moye’s Boys members continue the legacy of helping young people.

The group that was initially formed by the late Mickey Solis plus Bobby Odell and Juan Saldana, all Jefferson High School graduates began to get together along with other former classmates for breakfast. Soon it became a weekly affair and they decided to call themselves the “Moye’s Boys”.

H.R. Moye, born in Ridgeway, Ill., in 1919, built an impressive baseball record in El Paso. After playing semi-pro ball in Illinois and receiving a 1939 offer to join a Chicago Cubs farm team (which his parents would not let him accept), Moye pitched for several El Paso semi-pro teams – using a “hard” knuckleball taught to him by big leaguer Jimbo Vaughn. He coached varsity baseball in 1948 at El Paso High, then through 1958 at Jefferson High, where he was twice named Coach of the Year. He was an umpire for years and organized the Boys’ Baseball Umpires Association. He also was an assistant principal at Jefferson and Austin high schools, principal at Andress and Jefferson, and West Area superintendent. He became a member of the EPISD school board in 1985 and was president of the board from 1992 – 93.
